This is something I stumbled onto quite by accident...
While going about my normal daily life...
Because whenever people find out what it is I do -- all of a sudden it’s like being a doctor at a party surrounded by everyone in the room who has some ailment they’d like advice on!
Getting poked 'n prodded for free advice everywhere you go can be tiresome at times. You know the feeling, right?
HOWEVER, I don't need to tell you that freely sharing a certain amount of free professional advice can prove extremely profitable... Because during that split-second when someone starts seeing YOU as “their cure” and thrilled at their good fortune in your paths crossing — they (offline brick 'n mortar business people) are quick to grasp the reality that the solution or cure will ultimately not be free.
TIP: It’s often much easier dealing with offline brick 'n mortar business owners who have little internet knowledge or online experience because THEY (unlike many involved in online IM ventures) have NOT been conditioned to expect much for free! Perhaps a free initial consultation. Beyond that though? Heck no.
Think about it.
Okay then, moving right along to two chance encounters which led up to the “Brain Burp”...
Case #1:
One morning my husband was out getting our Jeep serviced. During the course of chatting with the service center’s owner, he found out the business had just recently opened. And hardly anyone knew it existed. Heck, they didn’t even have business cards yet! So my husband, never shy about mentioning how his wife is a “computer and internet marketing geek” (yup, that would be me), well, he mentioned it...
The business owner couldn’t wait to talk to me. Literally!
So hubby whipped out his cell phone, and put that business owner on the line to chat with me right then and there. And after a brief 5-minute phone chat... the service bill on the Jeep got slashed in half! It went from over $500 to less than $250. They even threw in a couple of extras at no charge.
The service I offered that would quickly cure that business owner’s immediate problem? Took me less than fifteen minutes. Without ever leaving my computer.
Case #2:
One afternoon I’d phoned a local business to inquire about some prices, location, availability, etc. During the course of that phone conversation there was some confusion. After hanging up I realized why. So I did the decent thing and called them back again. Just to clue them in. Turns out they were already aware of what I mentioned. Painfully so. In fact it was a nagging problem they’d tried to fix, multiple times, but had gotten absolutely nowhere.
You see, the WAY they’d gone about trying to solve their problem was completely logical. Really it was. But it was also all WRONG.
Of course there was a simple solution. But they (as are MOST offline businesses) were TOTALLY CLUELESS about its existence! Even though it’s clearly hidden in plain sight.
How do you spell their FRUSTRATION? I spell it “Ka-Ching!”
A few more minutes chatting on the phone resulted in that business’ manager offering me the very thing I’d originally called to inquire about -- the cost of which turned out to be $375 -- for FREE.
So once again being an “internet nerd” paid off, without ever leaving the comfort of the 'ol computer chair.
A pattern was emerging...
So I started researching. And sure enough... Those were not mere flukes!
The clincher was a phone call one morning from an online pal who wanted to pick my brain. Turns out he’s always running into offline business owners who try to pick his brain. His boggle that morning was if he should maybe start offering to build websites for those local business owners?
Uh oh!
Knowing his hectic schedule with a full-time j-o-b and a growing family, and knowing that although he owns several websites (which he’s always outsourced since he knows not thing one about creating even a simple web page!)...
My advice to him was that he might be getting into more than he could comfortably handle.
Then I started telling him all about the above cases. And more. And how he, even with his complete and utter lack of tech skills, could easily run with it. No website skills whatsoever required. No worries of support nightmares. And most importantly... how precious LITTLE TIME he’d need to invest.
Let me tell you, he was ALL EARS.
